Anne Benson

Anna Dashchuk was born November 19, 1927 near Kiev, Ukraine. She immigrated to Canada via a ship from Poland in 1928 with her parents James and Mirena Dashchuk and siblings: John, Maxim and Evelena. Their names were altered when they registered at Halifax Pier 21 harbour. Anne’s younger siblings: Mike, Bill, Olga, Christine and Nettie were all born in Canada.
Anne had fond childhood memories of Kuroki, SK where she had a very close friend who sadly died at an early age. The family moved to Somme and farmed a small plot of land. At the age of 20, Anne married Sever Benson, a War Veteran, on November 26, 1948. They had three children; Beverly, Valerie and Darryl and raised them in Somme. Anne belonged to Somme Legion #4 (the fourth legion established in Canada after the First World War). Anne spent most of her life in Somme, keeping an eye on her aging parents and siblings. Mom’s favourite colour was blue. She spoke only Ukrainian until she was 5 years old. She was a self taught seamstress and learned by taking old clothes apart. She never wasted anything, she was the most frugal person I knew. Anne remained in Somme until Sever passed away, then she moved to Melfort to be closer to her son.
Anne is survived by her three children: Beverly (Don) their children: Ryan, Taryn (Trevor); Valerie (Louis) their children: Aaron (Christy) and their son Jacob and Brandi (Ross) and son Bennett; Darryl (Brenda) and their children: Tammy (Jeff) and their children Samantha and Jessica; Leah (Chad) and their children Brielle, Elyse and Madden; Matthew (Rachel) and their children: Logan and Odin; Nicole (Brett) and their children: Kayden and Emery.
Anne was predeceased by her parents James and Marina Dashchuk; husband Sever Benson; brothers: Mike, Maxim and John and sisters: Evolena and Olga.
