Audrey was born in Strasbourg, Saskatchewan May 3, 1924, the second of four children to Arnott and Frieda Currie. During the early 1930’s her family moved to Fairy Glen where they lived a humble yet good life. From childhood Audrey was invested in sports and overall fitness. After graduating from high school, she attended Normal School in Regina, SK and became a teacher. She was teaching at Vaughan School on the southern outskirts of Melfort and roomed with Andrew and Annie Robson across the road from Vaughan School. When their son, Glenn, came home from military training at the Yorkton military base their relationship was quite instantaneous and they were married on January 1, 1944 until Glenn’s passing in May 1987.
Audrey was a busy mother to their five children as well as her involvement with both community and church. As well, Audrey enjoyed having both her and Glenn’s extended families nearby in Melfort.
In the early 1970’s Audrey had thought to return to her teaching career but found the vocation had changed significantly so instead in 1970-’71 she attended Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (M.U.C.C.) where she took the secretarial course. Once completed she worked for Hodgins Auctioneers before becoming a fulltime secretary at M.U.C.C. for the next 17 years until her retirement.
Several years after retirement the family farm site was sold and Audrey moved to Lacombe, Alberta. While living in Lacombe for the next 20 years she enjoyed nearby family, was active in senior’s groups and danced weekly in Red Deer. She was involved in her church group and travelled when any opportunity came up. In 2014 Audrey moved into a Seniors residence in Red Deer and over the next ten years she alternated living in both Red Deer and Yarrow, BC while most recently lived in Agassiz, BC.
Audrey is survived by her five children: Gerald (Helga), Beverley, Andrew (Betty), Barbara (Ric), Stuart (Carol), 9 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents and siblings Margaret Blocka, Lloyd Currie and Gretta Avison. One of Audrey’s ongoing enjoyments was maintaining connection with many friends and relatives over the years. She is survived by cousins, numerous nieces and nephews.
Audrey turned 100 in May and she went home to be with her Saviour in August of 2024.
A Graveside Service for Audrey will be held at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Melfort, on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 11:00 AM. Reception to follow at the Fedusiak Funeral Chapel.
