The family of Barrie Jung are deeply saddened to announce his passing on Thursday, April 25 at the Melfort Union Hospital with family by his side.
Barrie James Jung was born in Melfort to Arthur and Olive (Art and Bobbie) Jung on April 1, 1951, and raised on the farm in the community of Bagley. He was the oldest of three boys and attended a country school until transferring to Melfort to complete his education.
Barrie was a man of many talents and wore many hats. Being a pump jockey and mechanic as his first career, moving to Calgary working at Westland Metals, traveling to Thompson, MB to work in the nickel mine, moving back to Prince Albert to become a trucker hauling pulp, and finally returning to Melfort. Dabbling a bit in farming and getting his pilot’s license in that time. Barrie also started a part time career at 1420 CJVR on air, as many people became to know him as “The Bandit”! Also at that time, Barrie got involved in stock car racing (The Pink Panther), and continued recreational flying. It was during this time at CJVR in 1984 when he met the love of his life, Tanis. They were married in January of 1988.
In 1985 Barrie decided to leave CJVR and began a new career with Hodgins Auctioneers. He truly found his calling, going to Mason City College of Auctioneering in 1986. He loved every aspect of the auction business. Travelling across many provinces, states, even the world! He loved meeting people, working with staff and getting to know the auction customers through the years.
In 1991, Tanis and Barrie’s life was even more blessed with the birth of their son Devin, and life became complete in 1993 with the birth of their daughter Kendra. Over the next few years, life was busy with Barrie on the auction road, raising a family, spending summers at the lake, and of course, travelling to many, many locations with the Hodgins sled and tractor pulling with his 1955 Oliver Super 99 tractor. He also ran the sled for the Calgary Stampede for many years.
In 2015 Barrie’s plan was to retire from the auction world, and went to work at Darn Computers for a short time, but due to unforseen circumstances, Hodgins Auctioneers discontinued operations and Barrie went back to work to help close the business. The auction bug started up again, when Bruce asked Barrie if he would help with a few auctions. This led to Barrie working full time again with Bruce Schapansky Auctioneers right up to the last month, when the cancer made it too hard to work.
As an auctioneer, another thing that Barrie loved about the job was the chance to volunteer. He auctioned many fundraising events, including for the Humboldt Broncos, LaRonge Ice Wolves, Melfort Mustangs, Nipawin Hawks, Tisdale Trojans, Stars, Ducks Unlimited, Saskatoon City Hospital Festival of Trees and University Hospital Fundraisers…..we could go on and on with this list.
Barrie and Tanis became involved with the Melfort Mustangs as a billet family from 1997 to 2006. This led to Barrie being a member of the Booster Club, starting up the live auction fundraisers, driving a fan bus, being president of the club from 2008-2011, and game day announcer. Many, many fundraisers for the club were held, but Barrie would say the most fun of all was the Walleye Cup. A lot of hard work but we met so many new people and lifelong friendships were made.
For his service to the community and the province, Barrie was awarded Citizen of the Year in 2008, and received the Queens Platinum Jubilee Medal for volunteerism in 2022, and just recently was inducted into the Saskatchewan Auctioneers Hall of Honor.
Barrie leaves to mourn his wife Tanis, son Devin and daughter Kendra. Brothers, Bill and Bob. Sisters-in-law Deanie (Garry) and Lorie. Many nieces and nephews and their families. The list of friends and special people in Barrie’s life would be another 50 pages.
Barrie is predeceased by his parents, Art and Bobbie, In-laws, Gerald and Laura Harley, and sister in law Sybil.
Barrie was very proud of his 40 plus years of sobriety. His love and and dedication to his family and many contributions to his community and his work, will always be remembered. May you now rest Dad – you have shown us what true strength is.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to all the nurses at the Melfort Union Hospital. Your compassionate care provided comfort during our most difficult time. You will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Dr. Steffen…..Barrie considered you not only his doctor, but a friend. To all the doctors and nurses at the Saskatoon Cancer Center, your work is a difficult job that you handle with professional ease and grace. We were truly in awe of everything you go through daily. Please keep fighting the fight!
We are all stories in the end, remembered by the adventures we had, the achievements we made and the people we loved. So make sure your story is a good one.
Barrie’s Celebration of Life Service will be held from the Melfort Evangelical Covenant Church on Friday, May 10, 2024 at 2:00 PM with Gladys Court officiating. The interment will follow in the Carrot River Valley Lutheran Church Cemetery.
