A bright light has left this world peacefully after a long and happy life.
Cliff was born and raised in the Humboldt, Saskatchewan area.
Cliff is predeceased by his mother Elizabeth Roles (Zerff 2000) and father Francis Roles (1946). He left 3 younger siblings to mourn him – Joan Hallman (Mission BC); Louella Kalinski (Saskatoon); Glen Roles (Eileen) (Humboldt) and numerous relatives, friends, and close neighbors.
Cliff had the fortune of much love in his life. He married Shirley Freistadt on October 25, 1956. They had 3 children: Nadine (deceased February 20, 2022); Sherri (Paul); Craig (deceased November 11, 2024). Shirley fought a battle with cancer until December 7, 1975.
After many years as a lineman with Sask Power, they had ideas to be entrepreneurs and became owners of various pool halls and bowling alleys in Humboldt, Birch Hills and finally Melfort. The family remained a team during their venture, including living above the Humboldt bowling alley. They were outdoor adventurers, which led to Cliff building a cabin at Barrier Lake. The lake became the gathering place where family and friends enjoyed spending time together.
Cliff re-married Joy Braaten in Melfort on December 1, 1979. This brought 2 more daughters to the family: Lianne Gallais (Mike) and Lana McDonald (Rob). The family continued to grow giving Cliff 6 grandchildren: Todd, Shaylene, Morgan, Amanda, Alissa, and Kayla. These were followed by 7 great grandchildren. Cliff and Joy had an active life together – farming by Round Lake, travelling across Canada, Alaskan cruise, Vegas, casino bus trips and a lot of gardening, fishing and camping. Joy passed away on June 23, 2019.
Cliff remained in Melfort and continued his activities with gusto. He remained an avid gardener and enjoyed harvesting and sharing many of the garden vegetables with others. He spent many hours with his son, Craig, fishing, travelling to see family and their latest enjoyment of following the chuckwagon racing.
During the cold months, Cliff would dig into another passion of rug hooking, which he would generously offer people. Cliff was known to do his craft while cheering on his other favorite pastime of curling. A favorite night of the week was enjoying wings and beer with his sister-in-law, Aunt Dianne.
Cliff leaves an indelible mark on all our hearts. He will be greatly missed.
Cliff’s Funeral Mass was held from Our Lady of Consolation Roman Catholic Church, Melfort, on Saturday, April 12, 2025 with Father George Canto as Celebrant. The interment followed in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery Columbarium.
