Doris Barbara Bergen

Doris passed away peacefully on the morning of January 22, 2025, at Chateau Providence in St Brieux, Saskatchewan, where she had lived for the past 23 years. She was 75 years old and had battled with MS for almost 50 years. She was never one to let a challenge get her down or define her. She embraced life with a positive attitude, determination, curiosity, and always a good laugh. She grew up on the farm, near Bruno, Saskatchewan and after graduating from Humboldt Collegiate Highschool, attended Robertson Secretarial School in Saskatoon. She met her soul-mate, Ken Bergen and they married in 1971, moving to Melfort, Saskatchewan and later, building a home on an acreage near Star City, where they raised their three kids. Doris mostly stayed home to care for the kids but worked part-time as an administrative assistant. She was a community minded person, volunteering her time in minor sports, with the church, and when a friend needed a hand. Her kitchen was always full of wonderful baking, delicious meals, music and dancing. Her garden was always overflowing and prepped for preserving. The coffee was always on and treats were abundant. The bird feeders were always full and the bird book ready on the window ledge. And she was always ready for a cold beer in the sun or a game of cards and a gab with friends.
Doris’s life will be cherished and remembered by her husband Ken, her children and grandchildren: Tim (Erin) of Calgary, AB – Hope and Allison, Tanya (Graham) of Kaslo, BC – Damian (Ashlee) and Kylee (Taylor), and Scott (Lisa) of Saskatoon – Brooke. Her memory lives on with her siblings: Clementine Stahl, Dennis (Elaine) Hebig, Jeanette (Frank) Hilbert, Dwayne (Margaret) Hebig, and Gordon Hebig and in her extended family siblings: Jacquie (Ian) Baranec and Howard Bergen (Ivy Smid). Doris is also remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
Predeceasing her and greeting her in heaven are her parents: Albert and Barbara Hebig, her in-laws George and Sarah Bergen, her siblings Dianna Hebig, Caroline Hamm, and Delmar Hebig.
There are not enough words to share, just how missed Doris will be. After a long good-bye that has shown us all that there is never enough time, she is free.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Chateau Providence, who loved Doris like a friend, and cared for her with their hearts like family. There is no doubt, that years were added to her life and life was added to her years in their care.
Funeral Mass for Doris was celebrated from Our Lady of Consolation Roman Catholic Church, Melfort, on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 at 2:00 PM with Father George Canto as Celebrant. The interment followed in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Melfort.
Friends so wishing may make memorial contributions to the MS Society of Saskatchewan, or to the Chateau Providence Auxiliary, St. Brieux.
