Elsie Elizabeth Hiebert was born on July 9, 1926 in the Teddington District to her parents Henry U. and Susan Neufeld. She was the 10th child in a family of 11. Elsie attended the Teddington School where she completed her grade 8 at the age of 14. As a young girl she had to help with barnyard chores, bringing in wood, picking berries and working in the garden.
On October 14, 1947 Elsie married Jacob Hiebert. Jake and Elsie moved to Vancouver where they worked various jobs. They started their family in Vancouver where Jim and Bob were born. They moved back to Teddington in 1950 to start farming. Leo, Rodger, Rick and Ken were added to the family over the next 11 years.
Elsie was a very talented woman. She milked cows, shipped cream, grew a big garden and picked berries to keep her family well fed. Her bread and pies were especially good for all of us. She did lots of sewing for the boys and herself. In later years she took up quilting, making wedding, anniversary, and graduation quilts for many of the family members.
Elsie started to work off the farm in the early 70s. She sewed down filled winter jackets in Zenon Park. She worked at CSP in the margarine plant for 10 years. In 1986 Elsie joined Melfort Home Care and completed the home care aid course. She retired at the age of 70.
In her retirement Elsie loved to attend bowling each week in Melfort. She made many new friends. They went on bus tours, played cards and had fun times together. Elsie always wanted to keep up with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Elsie eventually moved off the farm to Diefenbaker Place in Melfort, and later to Parkland.
Elsie was predeceased by her husband Jake, son Ken, parents John and Susan Neufeld, and all of her siblings.
Left to cherish her memory and celebrate her life are Jim (Carol), Bob (Karen), Leo (Shannon), Rodger (Gayle), Rick (Maureen), her 10 grandchildren and their spouses, and 25 great grandchildren.
Elsie’s funeral service will be held from the Fedusiak Funeral Chapel, Melfort, on Monday, July 22, 2024 at 11:00 AM with Herbert Jansen officiating. The interment will follow in the Teddington Cemetery.
