Ernest Vern Peterson was born on July 9, 1928, in Weldon, Saskatchewan, to Annie and Karl Peterson. He passed away peacefully on June 13, 2025, at the remarkable age of 96.
Ernie began his education at Roosevelt School and later attended Canadian Union College near Lacombe, Alberta. After his studies, he worked at a planer mill and various sawmills in British Columbia. One winter he even contributed to the construction of the technical school and worked for the CPR in Moose Jaw. During that time, he also attended night school and learned to weld. Eventually, he returned home to Weldon, where he helped build the Wheat Pool Elevator alongside his father.
In 1952, Ernie began farming on his father’s homestead. A year later, on June 28, 1953, he married the love of his life, Linda Hoiseth. They were married for nearly 72 years. A quiet man with a strong and steady faith, Ernie lived a life rooted in devotion to his family, community and honest hard work. In the summer of 1954, he and Linda began building their family, welcoming Iris, followed by Crystal, Orlan, Arlene and Janet. Ernie was deeply involved in his community, serving on the sports club, the Wildlife Federation, and the boards of the Wheat Pool and the Co-op. He was passionate about sports – he played hockey well into his 60’s, curled, hunted, golfed, and even coached the Liberty Hall Sluggers baseball team. He also took great joy in cheering on his grandchildren, faithfully attending their games and activities.
In retirement, Ernie and Linda moved to Weldon, where “coffee row” became a part of his daily routine. They enjoyed travelling with friends to many destinations and spent countless hours playing Cribbage, Sequence and doing puzzles.
Ernie lived a long full life – one marked by love, integrity and quiet strength. We are all incredibly fortunate to have had him in our lives for so many years. Though we will miss him deeply, we take comfort in knowing he is now at peace and free from pain.
Ernie will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Linda (nee Hoiseth); his children, Iris (Elmer) Olchowy and their family, Lindsay (Ernie) Muller and children, Kaycee, Alex and Lucas, Janelle (Adam) Morrison and children, Grace and Gunnar, Adam (Shauntal) and their children, Bradyn and Hudson; Crys Peterson; Orlan (Roxanne) Peterson and family, Josh and children, Leo, Jett and Sonny and their mother, Amanda, Jared (Hannah) and children, Georgia and Jonie, Kristen (Brandon) Allen and children, Louis and Pete; Janet (Darrel) Wenig and family, Tyrell (Brianna) and Shelby Wenig (Dawson Doucette); and his son-in-law, Glenn Dodds, and daughter, Alanna Dodds (Brock Tilford); as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
