With sad hearts, we say goodbye to Gail Dianne Knutson, who quietly passed away on April 15th, 2025, at the age of 84.
Gail was born in Star City on July 18th,1940 to Lloyd & Pat McKee. She lived in and around Star City her entire life. In June 1966, Gail married Henry Knutson and in 1969, they were blessed with a son, Kendall.
In 1972, Gail & Henry moved to the farm where Henry worked with Kaye Wilson. Gail was a loving wife & mom, making sure Henry & Kendall had everything they needed. Although she didn’t ever love cooking, she made excellent meals and over the years, many of her recipes have been shared with family & friends. Gail maintained her home flawlessly and Kendall & Henry used to tease her that she did laundry every single day!
If you saw Gail out and about, you can be sure that she was dressed beautifully, and her hair was perfectly set. She was an excellent customer of the local ‘ladies’ shops’ in the area, and made sure Henry & Kendall, and later her grandsons, always had a sharp set of dress clothes.
Outside of her home, Gail was an active member of the Star City United Church. She and Henry were Melfort Mustangs fans, and season ticket holders for many years. Gail & Henry were fortunate to have many lifelong friends from Star City and they had an active social life. When Henry passed away in 2021, Gail moved to Diefenbaker Place in Melfort where she was able to be near numerous friends. Up until the very end, she looked forward to attending the ‘monthly birthday lunch’ with the ladies. During her short stay in the hospital, she had regular visits from so many good friends, and as it had been her whole life, Caroll Kirkland visited daily and was her best friend until the very end.
Gail & Henry retired and moved to Melfort in 2002, which Gail enjoyed very much as the freedom from the farm allowed her to focus on her family, of which she was immensely proud. When she became a grandma, she was over the moon!
Grandma Gail was always there for her grandsons, to shower them with love as babies, to enjoy and encourage them in everything they did, and as a good listener and friend as they grew older. Any time you called Grandma and said you were coming for lunch, you could count on a salmon sandwich, tomato soup and maybe a maple cookie!
Gail was down to earth, kind and funny. We are so thankful that she maintained her sweet demeanor and sharp humor until her last days. Gail was predeceased by her husband, Henry. Left to mourn are her son Kendall; Grandsons Cole and Jace and their mother, Layla; Sister Betty Ann (Jim) Kielbiski and nephews Craig (Moira), Sheldon (Liz) and their families along with other nieces, nephews and friends.
A Private Family Graveside Service will be held at a later date in the Star City Cemetery.
Friends so wishing may make memorial contributions to the Star City United Church, or a Charity of One’s Choice.
