PONCELET, Gerry “Gerald” Douglas, age 73, of Crystal Springs, SK, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2025, at home after a valiant battle with lung cancer. Gerry was born on December 9, 1952, in Melfort, SK, lovingly known as #4.
Gerry’s passion was heavy equipment operating, but he was also a creative inventor known as MacGyver to many. Gerry could weld, renovate, do carpentry, woodworking, plumbing, electrical and mechanics. He was a hard-working man who refused to give up until the problem was solved. He had a great love of animals and birds, and Canadian beer in a bottle – never a can!
He started his days in Meskanaw, SK, going to school, playing soccer and baseball. He went on to run his own feed-lot cleaning business. His life took a turn when he moved to Grande Cache, AB. He spent 20 wonderful years there, working at the mine and road building. That is where he met his wife, Lynn, and the real adventure began.
Gerry and Lynn moved to Crystal Springs, SK, buying 16 acres of bush, clearing the land and creating a wonderful oasis enjoyed by all, fondly named Relic’s Retreat. So many of Gerry’s creations can be found there, firepit tables, binzeebos, live-edge shelving, islands, and bar tops. For a man who made a living clearing bush, it would probably surprise some to know that he planted over 300 trees at Relic’s Retreat.
Gerry will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Lynn Sandelin Poncelet; his children, Tricia (Shannon) Simonson, Chad Poncelet and Wade Poncelet; his step-daughter, Kelly Sandelin; his wonderful grandchildren, Taylor Poncelet, Kennedy Simonson, Riley Simonson, Jessilyn Sandelin, and Novalee Dubois; his brothers and sister, Brian (Sonia) Poncelet, Terry (Alma) Poncelet, Dale (Jill) Poncelet, Lori (Keith) Moss, and Lee (Carol) Poncelet; as well as all those wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews. Gerry is predeceased by his parents, Dan and Joy Poncelet; his brother, James Poncelet; and his nephew, Daniel Poncelet.
A Celebration of Gerry’s Life will be held in the spring. All will be welcome.
