Gladys Moen, of Melfort, SK, passed away on December 23, 2018 at 96 years of age.

Gladys is survived by her children, Carol Nuttall of Port Alberni, B.C., Leroy (Diann) of Sexsmith, AB, as well as nine grandchildren: Tracy Towers, Heather Morran, Annette Moen, Pamela Rasmussen, Kevin Moen, Trevor Moen, Loralie Hamel, Bradley Moen, Donavin Moen, 22 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and one sister Helen Fennell.

She is predeceased by her husband, Orval Moen, two sons Gary and Eldon, granddaughter Lori. Her parents Axel and Katrina Strandberg, siblings Walter, Wilfred, Myrtle, Clifford, Alice, Raymond, Verna, Agnes and their spouses as well as Helen’s husband.

Gladys was born February 7, 1922 to Axel and Katrina on the family homestead north of Beatty, SK. In her mid teens, she went to work at the Clifford Gunderson home for $5.00 a month. While there, she met Orval Moen who farmed in the Thatch Creek district NW of Melfort. They were married in 1939. Primarily a very capable homemaker and loving mother, she was also an excellent seamstress, cake decorator, and was always well known for her wonderful buns and pies. Throughout the years, she taught sewing classes in surrounding towns, was a member of the Homemakers Club, president of the Melfort Union Hospital Auxiliary and a member of the Melfort United Church.

After Orval passed away in 1990, she sold the farm, moved into Melfort, and started another chapter in her book of life. Travel, custom sewing, a brief stint in Saskatoon, led to her final six years in Caskey Place where she prepared bake sales for the residents until her 95 birthday. She thoroughly enjoyed their 2:00 o’clock coffee sessions and evening cards as well as going to the Seniors Club weekly for Kaiser and whist and playing bridge whenever she could. Her highlight, in any week, was getting the chance to dance!

She passed away pain-free and peacefully in the Melfort Union Hospital, two weeks after finding out she had cancer, with her immediate family by her side. She will be remembered as someone who lived her life well.
