Grace Myrtle Haidey
August 5, 1924 – June 10, 2020
Grace was born near Kinistino on August 5th, 1924. At the age of 16, she moved to Melfort and began work as a seamstress. Four years later at the age of 20, she married her husband Steve Haidey on Valentine’s day, 1944. They were married for 66 years. Together, they built a family farm and raised three children.
Central to Mom’s life was her commitment and dedication to her family. She instilled the values of an honest day’s work and above all, honesty with others. Mom was never one to complain, despite the many hardships, and she always kept the attitude of ‘making the best of things’. She always had a smile on her face.
Mom was a remarkably resourceful and self-reliant woman. To earn extra money, she knit siwash sweaters, sewed clothes, and once even raised turkeys for sale. She was a social person and had many friends. She was active in sports, curling for many years, and then later having bowled in a woman’s league.
Mom was admired as an exceptionally capable homemaker. Her home was always neat and tidy and the meals that she cooked for family were always highly anticipated. Mom always grew a garden, something she did for 75 years. She was an expert seamstress and as a younger woman, sewed many of her own clothes as well as for others. Mom was a talented quilter and she made certain that each family member received their own special quilt. Throughout her life, she lived with kindness, and thoughtfulness for others.
Mom showed us all how to live a life that is more caring and kind. She made our lives richer and we are all better for having shared our lives with her.
Mom, we are forever grateful for your life of unwavering commitment and service to our family. We will always miss your smile.
