Jack Martin

John Robert Martin – who we all know as Jack – was born September 5, 1938, to John and Nellie Martin. Jack grew up on a farm near Somme, Saskatchewan, alongside his three younger sisters – Joan, Elaine and Loreen. Though he left school early to work, Jack later trained as a heavy-duty mechanic – a career that allowed him to tinker and fix things, which was probably a good thing since he loved to keep busy.
While hard work was always a part of who Jack was, it wasn’t all about work. He had a love for the outdoors, and it was during a hunting trip to Melfort that Jack met Cheryl, the woman who would become the best catch of his life. They had a whirlwind romance and were married in 10 months, which blossomed into a marriage that lasted 58 wonderful years. They celebrated this milestone just this past August.
When Jack was in his 30’s, they were blessed with their daughter, Lynnette, and son, Kade. Seven years later, Dexter, a teenager at the time, came into their lives and became their second son. He was the kind of dad who would do anything for his family, and he continued that role as a proud grandfather, attending as many of his grandchildren’s sports events as possible.
Beyond family, Jack was passionate about sports – from coaching hockey, playing baseball, curling, to always cheering for the Blue Jays, no matter their record. He even continued bowling until he was 85, coming just a strike and a half away from a perfect game! You could also always count on seeing Jack in the gym Monday through Friday, even if it was more for chatting than exercising.
Jack also had a deep love for fishing, never letting weather stop him from enjoying a day on the water. He found peace in gardening and was an active member of his church, serving on the board of Camp O’Kema and as both People’s and Rector’s Warden.
Above all, Jack was a man who was always there to lend a helping hand whether through his hard work, his love for his family, or his volunteering to the community. We will miss you deeply, but take comfort in all that you have done for us.
He leaves behind his wife Cheryl, their children Lynnette and Mark Walcer; Kade and Christy Martin; Dexter and Kris Kinequon. His grandchildren Zach and Morgan with great grandchild Ellie, Brandyn and Kianna, Quinn and Maxx Martin; Kelsey and Colton Laroque; Adam and Fallon, Joel, Sean and Amanda, Ryan and Blaire, and Mikayla Kinequon.
Jack was predeceased by his grandson Devon Walcer, and siblings-in-law Wade, Billy, Milton, Pat, Bill and Lynn.
A Service Celebrating Jack’s life will be held from the Melfort Evangelical Covenant Church on Saturday, November 9, 2024 at 2:00 PM. Interment to follow in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery Columbarium.
Friends so wishing may make memorial contributions to the Salvation Army, North East Circuit, Box 549, Melfort, SK S0E 1A0, or to a Charity of One’s Choice.
