Judy Marlene Curry (Melfort, SK) – Oct. 2, 1951 – Oct. 14, 2024
A brilliant and strong force of a woman, all packed into barely five feet of bright purple fashion, the world said goodbye to Judy Curry on October 14, 2024. Put simply, she was one of a kind and the world is a better place for the time she spent in it.
Growing up on a farm in Weyburn, SK, where she of course had to walk to school uphill both ways every day (despite living on the flat prairie), she learned kindness, compassion and strength of spirit from her beloved father, Cliff, her loving brother John and her dear Uncle Roland and Auntie Myrna. She was the first in her family to go to university and she made the most of it, training to be a child psychologist, a position she held proudly until her death. Through her work she helped multiple generations of children to reach their full potential in Melfort, along with her valued friends and colleagues.
She had two absolutely brilliant children (who get to say that, as they’re the ones writing the obituary) – Meghan (Vegreville, AB) and Dion (Swansea, UK) – who worked hard to annoy her as much as possible, but whom she loved fiercely and unconditionally. She was always there for them, and a group trip to New York to celebrate her birthday in style in 2017 was an especially cherished memory for all three.
She adored her grandchildren and their adventures – Justin and his Lego creations, standing proudly with Cameron at his high school graduation this June, Bretton’s handyman help fixing everything around her house, and the train heist adventure with Katelyn this past July.
An entire vibrant life can never be distilled into an obituary, especially Judy’s, but her (as we said, brilliant) children agree that everything they know about bravery, kindness, humour, grit, determination and generosity of spirit comes from this amazing woman. There is some solace in now discovering all the lives she touched, how special she was to so many people and what a long-lasting mark she left on this imperfect planet. She was many things, but above all else, to us she was Mom and Grandma. She was such a fundamental and valued part of our world, and it is not the same place without her in it.
If you knew and loved her, dress in your best purple outfit and most garish socks and raise a toast to a life that was so important to many people. There were a lot of charities that were dear to Judy’s heart, and in lieu of flowers we’re sure she’d appreciate some support for places like Plan International, Doctors Without Borders, Matthew’s House Swansea (UK), the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, Smiles, or any charity that is near and dear to your own heart.
A service celebrating Judy’s life will be held from the Fedusiak Funeral Chapel, Melfort, on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at 2:00 PM.
