Larry Alfred Don Shmyr was born in Melfort, SK to Tony & Eleanore Shmyr the 4th of 5 children in the family. He grew up on the family farm north of Beatty and took all his schooling in Kinistino. An athlete at heart, at an early age he became involved in playing fastball and hockey with a number of teams; North Star, Resource, Melfort 222’s, Kinistino Tiger Bruins, Melfort Monarchs and the Beatty Barons, just to name a few. On August 6, 1977 he married Cathy Flodell and together they were blessed with two children – Aaron in 1983 and Andrea in 1986. Larry & Cathy made their home in Melfort where he first worked in the plumbing and heating industry and later with the Sask Wheat Pool. In 1994 he took a transfer with the Wheat Pool and the family moved to Wilkie. Larry’s outgoing personality and ability to strike up a conversation soon made him well known and liked in the community. During their years in Wilkie, Larry helped coach various sports teams that both kids were involved in. Many miles were driven to watch Aaron play hockey & baseball, and Andrea in track & field, as well as fastball. In 2002, an opportunity for Larry & Cathy to move back to Melfort came about and he took a position with Agricore United which eventually led him to his current position with Richardson Pioneer.
Upon their return to Melfort, his love for the sport of hockey soon drew Larry back to coaching both Midget girls and Melfort Bantam AA boys. Keeping up the family Boxing Day tradition with the Hillbilly Farms family hockey team was also a highlight each year.
The summer of 2011 was a busy and exciting year for Larry & Cathy with two weddings and their first summer in their new cabin at Candle Lake. Family was everything to Larry and he was so proud to be a grandfather to six wonderful grandchildren. He spent many hours at hockey practices and games, Christmas concerts, playschool and kindergarten graduations. He loved family boat rides, beach days, or just playing street hockey or ball in the backyard with one or all of his grandkids. If you didn’t see him at a grandchild’s activity, he could be found helping out on the family farm, fishing at Candle Lake, watching a Melfort Mustang game or out for a run.
Larry will be remembered for his big smile, tender heart and quick wit. He was full of life and could light up a room with his infectious laugh.
Larry is survived by his wife Cathy, son Aaron (Lisa) Shmyr, Carter, Bryden, Parker; daughter Andrea (Carson) Penner, Casey, Drew, Josie.
