A woman can accomplish a lot in 94 years, and Maria Hryhor was no exception. Maria was born October 12th, 1924 in Toky Poland to Matrona and Prokip Betz, coming to Canada in 1931 and settling in Gronlid. After completing her grade 10 education, Maria moved to Ontario in 1943 to work in an ammunition plant during the Second World War.
After first meeting Peter in 1946, the couple married just two years later. Following a move to BC, Maria and Peter had their first daughter, Halia, in 1950. Moving to Nipawin in 1950, Maria and Peter were able to remain closer to family while also expanding their own. Halia soon had company, with her brothers Dennis and Orest being born in 1952 and 53, and her sister Patricia rounding out the Hryhor family in 1964.
Maria did a lot to keep busy over the years. Her contributions to the family business were immeasurable, serving as the Hryhor Builders secretary and treasurer since 1959. A believer in preserving her Ukrainian heritage, Maria was a member of St. Mary’s Orthodox Church, serving as a cantor for many years. Outside the church, she was active in the Ukrainian Women’s League, helping to cater banquets and fall suppers and demonstrating the use of traditional clay bread ovens. She was also very involved in the local museum.
Maria Hryhor is predeceased by her parents, brother John, husband Peter and son-in-law Barrie. She is survived by her children and in-laws. Her daughter Halia, son Dennis and Carol, son Orest, and daughter Patricia and Cameron. Her grandchildren Rene and Devin, Michelle and DJ, Jolene and Ryan, Matthew and Deanna, Justin, and Taylor. Her great grandchildren Abbie, Tessa, Ellyanna, Chase, Ashtyn, and Danica.
