Mom was born on November 4, 1933 to Roman and Justyna Siwak (nee Tomczij) on the family farm in the Kinlock District. Mom attended the Kinlock school for all of her education before becoming an aid at the Porcupine-Carragana Hospital in Porcupine Plain. On October 17, 1956, Mom married Bernard Hayunga and they started farming in the High Tor District before having four children; Duane, Diane, Scotty and Lisa.
Mom and Dad raised the four children on the farm teaching them the values of working hard and giving back to the community that were great life lessons. Once the family was older, Mom went back to work in housekeeping at the Porcupine-Carragana Hospital until she retired in 1999. In 1985, Mom and Dad moved to Porcupine Plain where many family dinners and back yard parties were hosted by Mom. She enjoyed spending time gardening, going on road trips with Bernard, camping, and spending time with her grandchildren; including playing catch, making cookies, playing cards and travelling to see the kids in their activities. Mom loved to walk. You would often see her walking around town. Mom’s theory was if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it! Mom was a member of the HighTor Ladies Club, Points West Living Resident Group.
After Dad passed in 2015, Mom found the winters long and lonely living alone. In early 2017, Mom decided to do a trail run in an assisted living complex in Prince Albert after making the Porcupine Plain region her home for 84 years. To her children’s surprise after two weeks living there with her meals and house keeping looked after Mom made the decision to sell her home in Porcupine Plain and move to Points West Living. In May of 2017, Mom moved in and lived there until July of 2022 when her health had deteriorated to the point, she needed more care. While at Points West Living Mom was involved in all the activities, shopping trips and Holiday season planning.
November of 2018, Mom decided at 85 years old to take her first commercial flight and travel to Florida to visit Diane and Dale at their winter home. This trip included many firsts, like her first airplane flight and her first time dipping her toes in the ocean.
She made many friends at PWL, and after her leaving many staff often asked about her In December of 2022, family were able to find a personal care home for Mom that fit her needs. She lived at River Breeze Personal Care Home from December of 2022 to May of 2025. She also made a positive impression there with staff and some of the residents, who asked how Mom was over the month of May. One of her neighbors shared that Mom was the first person she met when she moved in and it helped with her transition to the Care Home.
Mom was blessed to have been able to come home to Porcupine to spend her final days. She passed away on May 30, 2025 at the age of 91 Years. Thank-You to the Dr’s and staff at the Porcupine Carragana hospital for the excellent care while Mom was there.
