Mary Stromme was born in Carrot River, SK on November 17th, 1952 to Henry and Mary Wiens. She was the oldest of 17 children and often stepped in as a second mom to them while her mom and dad were away to town for meetings or errands. Taking her schooling in the Blue Jay School offered a few challenges, one being that they often had to walk to school. Sometimes Mr. Stewart, their neighbor would pick them up or John K. Doerksen would take them with the sleigh and horses.
Family was very important to Mary. She loved to spend time with her four children: Rose, Theresa, Kyle and Marita, as well as her many grandchildren. She rarely missed a game, a dance, or any other event they were a part of. The smile on her face as she proudly watched any of them is something that we will miss the most. She was usually the first to arrive at any family gatherings that were held with her dad and siblings, travelling near and far so she didn’t miss anything. Although with her arthritis and her ailing heart no one would have blamed her one bit if she had bowed out.
Over the years Mary showed her strong work ethic in the many occupations she held. She firmly believed that if you were going to do a job that you should strive to do it well and do it right the first time. Spending a few years as a farmer, she then moved on to become a sawyer on the sawmill that she helped run at Stickly Lake, SK. In 1985 she moved to Smeaton, while still spending some time running the sawmill, she eventually left that career behind to cook at the hotel in Smeaton. Through this career she cooked and managed the kitchen at many fly-in fishing camps, resorts, hunting camps and a ski hill. She is remembered fondly by coworkers for her hard work and dedication while never complaining. She is also remembered with a smile by anyone who got to taste her delicious baking, especially her mouth-watering cinnamon buns.
Living in Smeaton with Ken Norton, Mary spent her days on the phone with her children or grand-children or on the road headed to visit them and have a strong, hot cup of coffee. Mary had a green thumb and loved gardening and flowers; Ken always bought her as many hanging flower baskets as they could fit around their yard.
Mary is predeceased by her mother Mary, brother Abe, sisters: Helena and Agatha, nephews: David, Kristian and Kenneth and her two husbands: David and Gerald.
Left to lovingly treasure her memory are her husband Kenneth Norton, her father Henry, her children: Rose (John), Theresa (Sheldon), Kyle (Jolene) and Marita (Jeff) and their families, as well as her siblings and their families and many friends.
A Family Celebration of Life Service was held from the Carrot River Mennonite Church, Carrot River, SK on Monday, November 2, 2020 with Pastor Kevin Koop officiating. The interment will take place at a later date.
Friends so wishing may make memorial contributions to a Charity of One’s Choice.
