Sandra Ellyn Degerness (nee Shmyr)
April 27, 1950 – November 30, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sandra Ellyn Degerness, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, on November 30, 2024, at the age of 74.
Born and raised in Beatty, SK, Sandra attended school in Kinistino, SK, before pursuing her education at Business College in Melfort, SK. She was a dedicated and loving wife to her husband, John Degerness, for 54 years. Sandra worked at Service Canada for 32 years in Melfort and Saskatoon, where she made lifelong friends and was known for her dedication and work ethic.
Sandra had many passions that brought joy to her life. She was an avid crafter and enjoyed cross stitching, knitting, and baking. Gardening was one of her favorite pastimes, and she found peace in tending to her flowers. Sandra was a devoted supporter of her children, attending Ukrainian dance recitals of her daughter, Terrie, and watching her son, Tony, play hockey and ball. In later years, she delighted in watching her grandsons, Josh, Zach, Taylor and Nicholas play hockey and ball, and attending numerous school events and concerts. Summers at Candle Lake were a large part of her life, where she could be found sitting on the beach, water-skiing, and enjoying boat rides with her family.
Sandra was also deeply involved in her community, volunteering with the Ukrainian Dance Club of Melfort, the Melfort Kinette Club, and Ducks Unlimited in Melfort. Her spirit of service and generosity made a lasting impact on all those she worked with.
She was predeceased by her parents, Eleanore and Tony Shmyr, her in-laws Lillian and John Degerness, her brother Larry Shmyr, and her brother-in-law Keith Degerness.
Sandra will be deeply missed by her loving husband, John Degerness; son Tony (Nadine, Josh, and Zach) Degerness; daughter Terrie (Mike, Taylor, and Nicholas) Good; sister Shirley (Tom) Copeland; brothers Lauren (Trudy) Shmyr and Lionel (Lana) Shmyr; sister-in-law Cathy Shmyr; as well as her extended family, including her sisters-in-law, Rosslyn (Leonard) Millar, Donna (Daryl) Wilkison, Karen (Keith) McHarg, Verly (Norman) Breadner, Arlee (Doug) Scott, Louise (Randy) Drew, Joanne (Wayne) Pederson, and brother-in-law Leon (Christine) Degerness. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Sandra’s warmth, kindness, and devotion to her family and community will never be forgotten. Her love, creativity and compassion will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
A Private Funeral Service was held.
A Public Celebration of Life Service will be announced at a later date.
