The family of Victoria Borsa (nee Hawreschuk) is saddened to announce her passing on Wednesday, September 24th, 2025, at the age of 90.
Victoria (Vicki) was born on May 20th, 1935 in the Domremy area to Bella (Wintonyk) and Michael Hawreschuk. She received her elementary education at Pea Vine School, before moving to Crystal Springs where she attended South Invergordon School and Dixon Lake School. She completed a secretarial course at the Prince Albert Business College and began her career with the Government of Saskatchewan in Paddockwood, Big River, Prince Albert and Melfort.
Vicki met Dennis while both were substitute attendants at a wedding reception in Yellow Creek in the fall of 1960. A courtship ensued and they were married on June 17th, 1961. They began their life together on Grapin’s Hill, pioneering with no water and no power. Having grown up on the farm, as the eldest daughter, Vicki was no stranger to hard work. She was the consummate homemaker. Cooking, baking, sewing, gardening, canning, the farm book-keeping and pursuing some creative, crafty pursuits filled her days. These hobbies included crocheting and petit point, cake decorating and pysanka writing. Victoria loved piano music, bought herself a piano and taught herself to play. Vicki and Dennis built their first home in 1962 and raised their children, Darcy and Marvin, there. Vicki worked part-time as a secretary at the Yellow Creek School and enjoyed sewing much of her work wardrobe, as well as clothing for Darcy and Marvin. Vicki was also involved in several community organizations in Yellow Creek including the Yellow Creek Parks and Recreation Board and the Silver Halos. She loved flowers of all kinds (lilies were her favourite) and maintained the most beautiful yard. She spent hundreds of hours creating the yardscape, after they built their second home in 1996. When family or friends arrived for a visit, they could be sure they would be treated with hospitality and a very generous ‘lunch’ that she seemed to be able to whip up on whatever notice she had. Her collection of cookbooks is mind-boggling, and she was always eager to try something new. Just a few weeks ago, she learned how to make Shannon’s family galushki recipe. Vicki attended the Baptist Church in Crystal Springs and later, Wakaw. She loved the old classic hymns as well as many country music singers.
Victoria was always interested and supportive of her children’s activities and interests but truly embraced the role of Baba and delighted in her grandchildren. Her license plate was BABAVB and everyone knew that she would be at Christmas concerts, band concerts, sporting events or drive through the middle of the night if a grandchild was ill.
Victoria was predeceased by her parents: Michael and Bella Hawreschuk, sister, Janet Semeniuk, brothers-in-laws, Edward Semeniuk and Alec Bajbula and brother, Nick Hawreschuk.
VIctoria will be forever remembered and loved by her husband of 64 years: Dennis, her children, Darcy (Russell) Moore and Marvin (Shannon) Borsa, her grandchildren, Andrew Moore, Zachary Moore, Kahleigh Moore (Todd Rawlake), Tanner Borsa, Brooklynn (Josh) Sapara, Kaelin (Reid) Urbanowski and Rylan Borsa, and great-grandchildren, Jackson and Ava Rawlake and Royce and Raya Sapara.
She is also survived by her friend and sister-in-law, Nancy Hawreschuk , sister, Sylvia Bajbula and brother, David Hawreschuk, sister-in-law, Helen (Bill) Nemeth, brother-in-law, Tom (Phyllis) Borsa, sister-in-law, Joan Borsa and many nieces and nephews.
Our family wishes to offer our thanks and appreciation to the staff at Melfort Union Hospital as well as Dr. Vickie Martin and Dr. Pierre Hanekom for the compassion and excellent care that you provided for her and her family.
