It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, friend – Violet Malmgren (Kurtz). Violet passed away peacefully on April 28 2023 at the age of 91.
Violet was born on the Kurtz farm north of Kinistino on February 14, 1932. She was the third child and one of thirteen born to Arthur and Helen Kurtz.
Violet attended school in Kinistino and participated in a variety of sports and activities. She continued being active well into her late 80’s grabbing a hockey stick to play goal in road hockey, playing a mean game of bean bag toss or foose ball, she was always a contender.
Violet worked many summers as a “house girl” for different families taking over the role of gardener, cook and nanny; she also babysat evenings and weekends for .25 cents an hour. She used the money saved from these jobs to put herself through Teacher’s College.
Violet attended Teacher’s College in Saskatoon, after which she took a teaching position at Creek Hill. It was here that her friend Myrtle introduced her to her future husband, Elvin Malmgren.
Elvin and Violet were married May 15, 1953 in Kinistino, Saskatchewan. They began their farming life on the original Malmgren homestead SE 30 47 19 W2. Four children were raised here, Darlene Marilyn born July 6, 1954: Gregory Elvin August 2, 1955 (Bev), Judy Elaine born May 21, 1957 (Ralph Gibson), Brian Arthur September 27, 1959 (stillbirth), and Cindy Lou born October 6, 1964 (Darby Warner).
Many memories were made at the farm throughout the years.
Elvin passed away on October 5th 1992 at the age of 64. Violet spent that first winter on the farm and then moved into Melfort for the next winter. She moved into Melfort permanently shorty after that.
Violet and her sisters travelled together doing several bus trips to Alaska, Nova Scotia, Arizona and Minnesota and she truly enjoyed her travels. Violet loved gardening and baking and having her family around her. She hosted many extended family get togethers at her home and everyone enjoyed her fresh baked buns, Thin bread, meatballs and pault, a Swedish treat!
Violet’s family is very appreciative of the attentive and compassionate care she received at Parkland Care Home.
The funeral service for Violet was held from the Melfort Evangelical Covenant Church on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Kors Pater officiating. The interment took place at the Brockington Mission Covenant Church Cemetery prior to the Church service.
Friends so wishing may make memorial contributions to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan.
