Planned power outages in Melfort

Nov 7, 2017 | 4:00 PM

Power outages scheduled for today and tomorrow in Melfort will be in shorter time frames than an earlier tweet from SaskPower suggested.

In the notification, the company said power outages would occur between 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and again between 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. both tomorrow and Thursday.

SaskPower spokesperson Jordan Jackle said the tweet mentioned longer time frames over two days, the outage shouldn’t last that long.

“There’s a window of about five hours each day. For an individual customer we’re only looking at probably a two to three-hour outage. Once our crews do their work they will restore power to the customers and move on to the next group,” Jackle said.

Approximately 40 residences in the area of Scotia Street, Scotia Drive and Bemister Drive will be affected.

Jackle said the maintenance work is needed due to ground shifting during the dry summer season.

“Melfort does have some clay in the soil and some of our crews noticed in that particular area there was some very slight ground shifting. We decided that as a precaution we’re going to put up expansion boxes,” Jackle said.

The work provides slack between underground power lines and the residential meters.

Customers were notified with door hangers.
