Smeaton fundraiser features the ‘Harley Guy’

Jan 19, 2018 | 4:00 PM

The man known for his impressions of cars, planes and Harley Davidson motorcycles, will be bringing his brand of humour to Smeaton this weekend.

Herb Dixon will perform at the Smeaton Rec. Centre Saturday night. The 61-year-old got his start in comedy when he was 26.

“Back in that time I was a crazy guy, I was the life of the party,” he said. “I’d be sitting in restaurants telling funny stories and all the tables around us would be listening and laughing.”

A career in comedy was not something Dixon imagined as a boy but rather was a suggestion given to him by a close friend, who was visiting him in Calgary.

“I was throwing an annual party and I was making people laugh and he was killing himself and he says ‘man you’ve got to come to Vancouver to the comedy club,’” he said.

The show this weekend is advertised as a clean comedy show. Dixon said he likes to appeal to a larger audience.

“I gauge my audiences you know I can get down and dirty like the rest of them but my whole mandate is to let everyone have fun,” he said.

Dixon has performed at numerous fairs and exhibitions. He has opened concerts for country music stars and even has his own comedy special but he has never been to Smeaton. When asked what the audience might expect, Dixon said he talks about things that are true to life.

“When I go to each town I look at things and I try to get on side with what the people there are talking about but I like talk to about everyday things like flying in a plane, driving a car, and renting a car,” he said.

Dixon has also performed for all sizes of crowds ranging from several hundred to several thousand, but he said some of his best shows seem to be in the smallest towns. He recalled one particular show he did in Donaldson, Alberta.

” I went in there and there was like one light in the whole town and I thought this is a beautiful little Amish community until I saw the light bulb and realised it wasn’t Amish,” he said.

The profits from the show this weekend show will help support the Smeaton Rec. Centre which includes a gym, hockey rink and three curling sheets.

The town pays a portion of the costs each year to keep the facility open but users are required to hold their own fundraisers as well. Tickets for Saturday’s show are available through the Smeaton Post Office and the Smeaton Hotel.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m.
