Oct 27, 2023 | 1:48 PM

Carlton Trail College is celebrating its 50th anniversary this 2023/24 academic year, with its main celebration happening on December 7th.

The event will be open to the public, as everyone is invited to attend and learn about the impact the College has had, along with its plans for the future.

The institution has been providing post-secondary education and skills training, academic upgrading and essential skills courses, English Language Training and industry workforce development opportunities to individuals, businesses, and organizations across east-central Saskatchewan for the past half-century.

The College region is home to over 65,000 people, with approximately half living in small urban areas and half living in villages, farms and First Nations communities.

Saskatchewan’s regional colleges are mandated to provide access to post-secondary education and training in such communities, which includes Treaty 4 and 6 territories in Carlton Trail College’s learning region.

Carlton Trail has continued to serve the needs of all these people, including its students, since 1973, all the while being governed by a regionally representative board of directors.

Since its inception, individuals within their learning communities have had a direct stake in how their college is governed, and how they deliver their education and training opportunities across their learning area.

“Carlton Trail’s College vision, Changing lives through learning,’ expresses our wish for all of our students to find meaningful, supportive educational experiences that help them lead successful and self-directed lives,” says Amy Yeager, President and CEO.

“Over the decades, we’ve remained committed to that vision, and continue to work with our guiding Ministries, funding partners, stakeholders, industry and our communities to help train individuals for the jobs of the next 50 years.”

This includes a recently announced trades training facility expansion, which will help serve learners, business and industry along the way.

Carlton Trail College also works collaboratively with other post-secondary institutions to offer meaningful education and training opportunities to individuals in rural regions, such as their Agriculture Services program, a joint partnership with three other regional colleges.

In almost all programs, work-integrated learning is an important feature and matches students to potential employers through direct work placements, clinicals, practicums, and industry-specific opportunities.

These high-quality, industry programs, like Heavy Equipment Operator and 1A truck driver training, for example, are clearly in demand and are helping to meet current and future workforce needs.

Carlton Trail College undertakes strategic labour market planning, adapts its programs to address regional and provincial workforce trends, and can customize programs to fit the needs of individual sectors or employers.

Their primary learning locations are in Humboldt, Watrous, Wynyard, and Punnichy, as well as community classrooms across east-central Saskatchewan.

The College provides a significant economic impact to the region, as according to a 2017 economic impact analysis, they have generated over $10 million in labour income – that’s $10 million earned by individuals living, working and raising families within the east-central area.

With 50 years behind them, Carlton Trail College looks forward to educating and training the learners of tomorrow.
