Todd Goudy claims Melfort Saskatchewan Party nomination

Saskatchewan Party members are entrusting Todd Goudy as the next potential Member of the Legislature in the Melfort riding.

Goudy defeated three other hopefuls Wednesday before a byelection to fill the late Kevin Phillips’ seat that would ultimately decide the next MLA. Goudy, a long time Melfort resident and local pastor said he didn’t win alone.

“I’m really humbled and appreciative of the support people had for us tonight. I didn’t get here on my own; I was riding on their shoulders,” Goudy said.

Tim Hoenmans, Louise Schweitzer and Scott Lessmeister were all seeking the nomination. Although the win came with a heavy heart, Goudy thought his community involvement put him ahead of the other candidates.

“I do know I made a lot of friends over the years and I’ve devoted my life to serving people. Maybe that’s what they voted for tonight,” he said.

Just over 800 ballots were cast during the nomination vote, but the SaskParty doesn’t divulge the vote count during nomination elections. The next step for the party is to choose a new leader on Saturday. Goudy said being involved in politics and the party is a dream come true.

“This is what I’ve hoped for since I was 19-years-old. To be in my hometown serving the people of my community. Life couldn’t be any better,” he said.
