PBCN prepares for election

Members of Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation head to the polls next month.

The election for chief and council has been scheduled for April 9 and a list of candidates was released Monday by the electoral officer.

They have however indicated the list is still subject to change and may have to do in part with a requirement all candidated submit their CPIC before the election.

As of Wednesday there are nine candidates running for Chief: Karen Bird (incumbent), Peter A. Beatty, Elysha Bear-Morin, Melville Linklater, Joseph McKay, Darrel McCallum, Tracy Merasty, Ovide Michel and Darrin Morin.

A chief candidates forum has been scheduled for March 30 and will be done via Zoom.

In addition to the chief election, there’s also 14 elected councillor positions.

Amisk Lake (one): Roderick Bird, Marvin Morin, Clayton Sewap and Ethel McDermott.

Deschambault Lake (two): Walter Ballantyne, Mathias Ballantyne, Trevor Ballantyne, Cornelius Ballantyne, Sharon Bear, Justin Beatty, Peter Robert Beatty, Katie Sewap, Bernice Sewap.

Prince Albert Urban (one): Clarisse Lecoq, Johnathan Merasty and Warren McCallum

Pelican Narrows Councilor Candidates (five): Georgina Ballantyne, Myrtle Ballantyne, Thomas Linklater, Eileen Linklater, Anson Ballantyne, Roy Custer, Olivia Custer, Leon Dorion, Theola Dorion, Vernon Dorion, Justin Halcrow, Francis Highway, Karen McCallum, Emil McCallum, Weldon McCallum, Gabriel Michel, Josephine Michel, Denise Morin and Sarah Swan.

Sandy Bay (two): Nora Bear, Norma Bear, April Bear, Rachel Castel, Arnold Daylight, Shannon McKay, Michelle Ballantyne-McDonald, Antoine Nateweyes, Harvey Nateweyes, Roland Nateweyes, Ronald Ray and Tim Underwood.

Southend (two): Moses Bird, John Bird, Florence Clarke, Simon Jobb, Victor Jobb, Hector Morin, Jeremy Morin, Nelson Morin, Kevin Morin.

Sturgeon Landing (one): Lorraine Awasis, Richard Budd, Allan Michel and Kevin Sinclair.

Advance polls are on April 3 and will occur in the various involved communities as well as in Saskatoon at the Ramada Hotel and the friendship centre in La Ronge.
