Wakaw to lose old grain elevator

A fixture of the Wakaw skyline for over 35 years will soon be no more.

The Richardson Pioneer Grain Elevator is slated for demolition after preliminary preparation work started today.

Wakaw Mayor Steve Skoworodko said it’s a sad trend.

“We are sorry to see another Saskatchewan iconic landmark going down but we understand business has changed for a lot of the grain companies and what their process is,” he said.

The grain elevator was built in June, 1982 but was dormant for nearly a decade.

“Fortunately Pioneer is not leaving the community. They are rebuilding a fertilzer storage and handling facility within the community so we are not losing any jobs,” Skoworodko said, adding the town will still feel some impact. “It does mean a little bit of a hit for the town in regards to taxes as it is another building that will be gone out of our tax base.”

A spokesperson for Richardson Pioneer told northeastNOW the grain elevator would come down sometime in the next month.

Mihalicz Excavating Ltd. was contracted to demolish the elevator. 
 
“We’re hoping they will do it on a day when to make sure the dust and everything else doesn’t fill in the town,” Skoworodko said. “I’m sure they will give us the day when they know for sure when they will knock it down.”
 
There will still be one grain elevatior standing near the town. 

The former POOL elevator is privately owned and used for personal farm operations.
