Diamond North Credit Union CEO calling it a career

Jan 15, 2018 | 4:00 PM

For the first time in almost two decades Diamond North Credit Union will need a new chief executive officer.

John Shenher announced he will retire from the position in June this year. Shenher started his career in his hometown of Assiniboia as a collection officer 35 years ago. He was working in Archerwill at the credit union when the job of Nipawin Credit Union general manager opened 18 years ago. Shenher said Nipawin was familiar to him when he applied.

“I knew what kind of really nice place it was; it’s such a hidden gem,” Shenher told northeastNOW.

Shenher said there has been several mergers over the years since he started in Nipawin. The organization now has eight locations in Prince Albert, Carrot River, Arborfield, Choiceland, Zenon Park, White Fox, Albertville, and Nipawin. Shenher said the expansion is important to him.

“The growth and development of the organization to making it one of the largest credit unions in Saskatchewan, I’m very proud of that,” he said.

Diamond North is the ninth largest credit union out of 46 in the province, Shenher said the organization ranks 71st in Canada out of almost 400 across the country. The credit union serves over 14,000 members. He also said numerous projects across the region is another highlight. Shenher said they’ve given to the arena for a new clock, the new outdoor swimming pool, annual scholarships and school funding over the years. Shenher said providing for the community is what he will miss the most.

“I will miss the people and the whole attitude of serving our members and making a difference in the community,” he said.

The credit union board is now in the process of finding Shenher’s replacement. The executives plan to have a new CEO in place in June.
