Local Teams Take Home Medals at Volleyball Provincials

A few teams from the Northeast participated in the Saskatchewan High School’s Athletics Association (SHSAA) Girls Volleyball Provincials on the weekend, and took home some hardware in the process.

The 3A tournament was being held in Carrot River, SK and featured the hosts, along with teams from Wakaw, and Wynyard. The Wakaw Warriors dominated the round robin portion of the tournament, going 4-0, and not losing a set in the process. The Wynyard Bears would go 3-1 in round robin play, finishing first in their pool.

The Warriors and Bears met in Saturdays final with both teams not losing a set in the playoffs to that point. Wynyard took the first set 25-10, but Wakaw came back, winning the last two sets 25-10, and 17-15, claiming the gold medal. Head Coach Luke Strueby said the win is big for the community that really rallies around volleyball.

“Volleyball has been a big thing in the school for a long time now, so it’s kind of continuing on the tradition,” Strueby said. “You could tell, when we hosted regionals [in Wakaw], the gym was packed. Then in Carrot River, a couple hours away, there were still a lot of fans coming out to support the girls.”

The host, Carrot River Wildcats went 0-4 in round robin play, and did not make the playoff round.

The 4A tournament was held in Clavet this year, and featured the hosts, along with the Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC) Comets, and the L.P. Miller Bears.

MUCC finished second in their pool after round robin play, while L.P. Miller finished first place in the other pool (both teams held 3-1 records).

The Bears and Comets would meet in the semi-finals on Saturday, with MUCC coming out on top in a three set match. That paved the way for MUCC to take on Lumsden in the finals. Unfortunately for the Comets, they fell short to Lumsden in straight sets. Head Coach Jennifer South said no matter the result, it was a great experience.

“We’re extremely proud,” South said. “Jerome Linnell and I were both coaches and both of us in the end, no matter what the final result was, we were just happy with the girls. They played really well all weekend, but they just kind of ran out of gas in the end.”

The 1A tournament saw teams from Rose Valley, Englefeld, and Vonda take part. Rose Valley would defeat Englefeld in the final to take home gold.
