Nipawin strengthening enforcement on dumped snow

There’s ‘snow’ way the Town of Nipawin will allow dumped snow to stay on the roads this winter.

During a meeting last month, Nipawin council approved a bylaw to allow the town to strengthen enforcement when dealing with individuals who move their snow out to the roadway, streets, or sidewalks next to the road.

Barry Elliott, Nipawin’s chief administrative officer, told northeastNOW that dumping excess snow on the roads or sidewalks has never permitted in the community.

“People have other methods of disposing their snow, primarily on their own property,” Elliott said. “This [bylaw] is intended to make sure the roadways and adjacent areas remain clear, and vehicular traffic still has good sightlines.

The bylaw is primarily targeted at snow, but also comes into effect during the summer for things such as grass clippings.

“Most people are very good and do take care of their properties,” Elliott said. “That’s greatly appreciated, and the town wants to support that, but when it becomes problematic is when the town’s roadways are used as a bit of a dumping ground.”

Any resident guilty of dumping snow on the roads or sidewalks can be fined $75 a day.
