Melfort Fire Department receives donation, looking to upgrade technical rescue

A donation made by Farm Credit Canada on Wednesday, Feb. 6 looks to be one of the first steps for the Melfort Fire Department to upgrade its technical rescue service.

Jason Everitt, fire chief for the Melfort Fire Department, told northeastNOW Farm Credit Canada makes annual donations to community services. He said he was approached to see if the department could use the funding.

“As we build capacity from both a technical rescue and a hazardous material response, we need to purchase some significant tools and equipment,” Everitt said.

The donation from Farm Credit Canada will go to accessory tools for the department’s Jaws of Life.

Everitt hopes to continue updating other pieces of equipment at the department after a risk assessment in the community.

“High angle rescuing, rope rescuing, and low slope rescuing requires an assortment of tools, ropes, pulleys, and connecting devices,” he said. “That’s one piece we’re looking at getting. We can also use that for confined space rescue with the addition of some other tools.

“With respect to dangerous goods or hazardous materials response, we have very limited capabilities right now, so we’re looking at enhancing that as well. So far, the community has been great as far as supporting us, but it gets fairly expensive when you start looking at all that gear.”

Everitt called it a multi-year project to purchase the items, and train members on using them.
