Tisdale Florists wins in Community Futures video contest

A northeast community emerged as the Saskatchewan winner in a Prairie-wide competition.

Tisdale Florists, a flower shop on 100 St, won the Saskatchewan Start Up category of the Community Futures Just Watch ME! Video Contest, where rural business owners created two-minute videos explaining what their business are about and judges decided who won cash and prizes.

Vanessa Savage, owner of Tisdale Florist, told northeastNOW she was encouraged to enter by Sagehill Community Futures Development in Bruno, but never expected to take home the win.

“I just did it because I thought it would be something fun and different to do,” Savage said. “When Susan called to let me know, I was just excited. We could use this money, training, and information to help grow our business.”

Tisdale Florists has been around since 1992 with several owners. Savage took over the shop back on March 31, 2018.

“I had never actually even dreamt of being a florist until I went from planting to growing flowers into the end product, and this is where I ended up,” she said.

Savage said there aren’t any current plans to expand on Tisdale Florists, just focus on growing the shop and making it sustainable for the Town of Tisdale to rely on.

Michelle Janzen’s Signature Cakes & Cookies in Waldheim was the lone Saskatchewan business to finish top-four in the seasoned entrepreneur category. Savage mentioned she could enter in that category once she has a few more years of ownership under her belt.
