Tough Break

Broken stick costs Mustangs in overtime, look for response in Weyburn

Oct 24, 2026 | 5:08 PM

The Melfort Mustangs began the first half of their southern swing Friday night as they travelled to Estevan to take on the Bruins.

It was an uneventful first period between the two clubs before Melfort opened the scoring in the second and took a 2-1 lead heading into the third.

The Bruins responded early in the third, scoring a pair and taking their first lead of the hockey game, before the Mustangs answered with just over 30 seconds left, sending the contest into an extra frame.

Unfortunately, that was basically all she wrote for the Stangs, as Estevan took just 10 seconds to score in overtime, winning the match by a score of 4-3.

While the Blue and Green did get a point on the evening, it was a disappointing ending, as a broken stick spelled their ultimate demise in the 3-on-3 battle.

Right off the overtime faceoff, Mustangs centreman Jack McHarg’s stick snapped in two, giving the Bruins an immediate 2-on-1, an opportunity Estevan was sure not to waste.

Now, Melfort is looking for a response to cap off their Southern swing, as they’re in Weyburn Saturday night to clash with the Red Wings.

Weyburn themselves are also coming off a loss, as they lost a 5-0 home decision to the visiting Humboldt Broncos.

Tonight will mark the second meeting of the season between the Stangs and the Red Wings, with the Wings having beaten the Blue and Green a couple of weeks ago, back at the Northern Lights Palace.

This evening’s contest will kick off with a 7 p.m. puck drop, with the pregame show on 105CJVR and CJVR.com going at 6:45 p.m.
