Ministry of Highways changes speed limits near Tisdale

Drivers will need to hit the brakes a little harder while strolling through Tisdale.

The Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure reviewed and revised speed zones on Highway 3 and 35 in Tisdale after a request from the town.

Speed limits on Highway 3 going into town will have a gradual slow down of 100 to 70 to 50 km/h, while leaving town will go from 50 to 70, to 100 km/h. The previous speed limits were 100 to 80, to 60 km/h.

Speed limits on Highway 35 north of Tisdale will have a less sudden slow down for drivers going into town and a more gradual acceleration leaving. New limits will be 100, 70, and 40 km/h, changing from 100, 50, and 40 km/h.

Brad Hvidston, Tisdale’s chief administrative officer, told northeastNOW the town wanted traffic on Highway 3 particularly to slow down with the addition of new businesses such as Tim Horton’s, Sobey’s Liquor Store, the Canalta Hotel, and the Co-op Food Store along the way.

Hvidston said the Town of Tisdale agrees with the Ministry of Highway’s proposal going north and east, although they have more recommendations going west.

“The area between Heritage Road and the grid road that goes toward P&H where SARCAN is located, that’s the stretch of highway that we have traffic safety concerns with,” Hvidston said. “We’re going to continue to dialogue with the ministry and see if we can get them to reconsider their recent proposal.”

In the meantime, Ministry sign crews have been asked to remove the existing speed limit signs and install the new recommended signs.

The Ministry of Highway’s also stated it will extend the no-parking zone along Highway 3, west of the Highway 35 intersection.
