Mustangs celebrate season at annual awards banquet

Mar 4, 2019 | 9:32 AM

After a busy weekend on the ice, the Melfort Mustangs got a chance to celebrate their success in the regular season.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League club held their annual awards banquet on Sunday, March 3 at the Kerry Vickar Centre. The team held a jersey auction, and looked back at the season that was.

The big award winner on the night was local defenceman Boedy Donald out of Star City, Sask. The longtime SJHLer took home four awards on the evening. Those awards included the Most Dedicated Player, Most Dedicated to Fitness, and Most Valuable Defenceman (split with Kayle Tosh). Donald said it’s nice to be honoured, but there’s still something missing.

“I’ve never been the most skilled player,” Donald told northeastNOW. “So it’s good to be recognized for dedication and what not, but really without a [Canalta] Cup at the end of the year, none of that really matters too much to me. It feels good right now, but at the end of the day it’s not the end goal.”

He said the night is a great way for the team to decompress.

“Nights like this are kind of just a little reminder that it is a game at the end of the day, and we’re just here to have fun,” Donald said. “But still, the main goal is to just win at the end of the year.”

Linemates Justin Ball and Carson Albrecht took home three awards each. Albrecht took home the Community Involvement Award, Hardest Working Player, and Plus Minus Award. The Mustang Captain said the Community award, and Hardest Worker stuck out for him.

“Both of those, coming from the community, it means a lot,” Albrecht said. “Obviously it’s a great community to play in, and it means a lot to me to be awarded those.”

Ball was the recipient of the Three Star Selection Award, along with Most Valuable Player, and Top Scorer.

Defenceman Alex Rondeau took home a pair of awards, winning the Most Improved Player, and Rookie of the Year honours. He was quick to credit his roommate, and captain for his progression through the year.

“I was just a little bit scared at first, I didn’t know what to expect,” Rondeau said. “But Carson [Albrecht] showed me what to do, or where to go, or whatever. So he’s the best captain I’ve ever had, and one of my best friends now too.”

Rondeau said he was ‘surprised’ that he won the awards.

The Mustangs are back in game action on Tuesday when they visit the Flin Flon Bombers.
