Monster trucks roar back to Prince Albert after decades-long absence

Monster trucks are set to return to Prince Albert for the first time in more than 30 years this summer.

Lake Country Co-op presents Ram Monsters and Mayhem, scheduled for Aug. 15 and 16 at the Prince Albert Exhibition Grounds, marking a rare stop for the high-octane motorsports show in northern Saskatchewan.

Promoter Rob Waloschuk said it has been decades since fans in the city last saw monster trucks live.

“It has been a long time. I mean, at least with the monster trucks anyway,” Waloschuk said. “It’s got to be over 30 years ago that monster trucks were actually at PA Ex grounds.”

The event is being produced by Outlaws of Motorsports, a touring company that brings monster truck shows and other motorsports entertainment to smaller centres across Western Canada, giving fans outside major cities a chance to experience live events.

“You have to always travel to the big cities to get into these shows,” Waloschuk said.

Unlike indoor winter shows held in larger venues such as SaskTel Centre, the Prince Albert event will take place outdoors, something Waloschuk said allows for a more authentic experience.

“It’s where they can really do what they’re meant to do on the outdoors… a lot of open spaces and bigger jumps, bigger things to crush and just put on a real monster truck show like it should be outdoors,” he said.

The show will go ahead regardless of weather conditions.

“If it rains, we still go anyway. It’s a rain or shine event,” Waloschuk said. “Some people love the mud and it adds a different element to the show.”

Advance tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. through the Outlaws of Motorsports website and by phone.

Waloschuk also encouraged attendees to arrive early to take in pre-show activities.

“If you get in there early, doors open an hour and a half early, you can get into the free pit party and get yourself signed up for some monster truck rides as well,” he said.

Shows are scheduled for 2 p.m. both days.
