Horizon School Division finalizes upcoming school calendar

Mar 25, 2019 | 10:54 AM

The 2019-20 school year calendar has been finalized for the Horizon School Division.

Teachers will be set to start work on the last week of August, after a convention, which is a change from previous years.

Director of Education Kevin Garinger said it’s the usual start date for students in the fall and Christmas break is normal, too.

“It’s a two-week long Christmas break again and classes resume the first full week in January,” Garinger said.

There is a small change to November’s schedule.

“We’ll have a day that will be prior to Remembrance Day holiday which this year falls on a Monday and then there is another day after that where teachers will come back and support staff will come back but students will not be back,” Garinger said.

There will still be a full week off in February and a full week for Easter break as well.

“We always know that if we support our staff then our staff can support our children effectively so part of that is ensuring that this calendar meets their needs as well,” Garinger said.

There are 197 operational days with 183 instructional days. Horizon’s opening day celebration will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 28.
