Mustangs Playoffs

Mustangs fall behind early, can’t fully recover in Game 4

Apr 4, 2019 | 3:41 PM

Things are all square in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) semi-final series between the Estevan Bruins and Melfort Mustangs.

On Wednesday, the Bruins took a 4-2 win on home ice over the Mustangs to bring the series to 2-2.

In the first period, the Bruins got out to a hot start. Cody Davis scored just 3:44 into the game as Estevan scored first for the fourth time in the series. Davis added a second marker less than six minutes later to quickly make it 2-0. That was followed by a pair of goals scored by T.J. Irey who scored goals at the 9:39 mark and 13:12 mark of the first period. Melfort was able to get one back with about two minutes to play as Jake Hobson scored and made it 4-1 heading into the intermission.

In the second period, the Mustangs seemed to wake up. They had plenty of momentum and plenty of scoring chances. However, they were only able to get one marker, at the 12:08 mark and Colin Schmidt capitalized on a nice two-on-one pass from Kyle Schneider to make it 4-2.

That’s as close as Melfort would get, but they did have their chances in the third period as well, just could not seem to beat the Bruins netminder Grant Boldt who stopped 13 of 14 shots over the final two periods of the game. Head Coach Trevor Blevins said that some mental errors cost them early.

“I was pretty proud of the guys how we responded for the end of the first, and into the second and third,” Blevins said. “I really thought we were the better team. We just have to shore up those defensive errors that cost us.”

The series now turns into a best of three with game five going on Friday in Melfort.
