Local recreational hockey team heading to prestigious Banff Cup

A local hockey team will be in Banff, Alberta for the prestigious Banff Cup hockey tournament that runs from April 26 to April 28.

The Northeast Warriors have been to Banff, or similar tournaments four times before. This will be their fifth time as the Warriors or a similar incarnation of the team.

Canadian Hockey Enterprises puts on the tournament along with others throughout Canada and the United States. Captain Linden Harper said the tournament is about more than the hockey.

“It’s a rec hockey tournament where you can go have fun,” Harper told northeastNOW. “Play some hockey, go out to the nightlife, meet new people and try and bring home a trophy I guess.”

The Warriors have been able to bring home trophies two times before, winning in Banff in 2012, and in Kelowna in 2015. Harper said bringing one back to Saskatchewan again would be awesome.

“It’s always a cool experience,” He said. “You gain so many memories with the guys that you win it with.”

“We’ll do everything possible to bring it back.” -Linden Harper

Last year, the Warriors were in Banff and learned about the Humboldt Broncos Bus Crash on April 6, 2018. Harper said they honoured the Broncos last year, and will do so again.

“[Last year] we didn’t have any stickers or anything like that to represent them,” Harper said. “So we actually went to Canmore, Alberta and picked up some green hockey tape and we put some hockey tape logos on our jerseys but this year we are going to put a Humboldt Broncos decal on our helmets.”

All the Warriors players have ties to Melfort and area in some way, whether they currently live in the city, or have in the past.

Fans can follow the team’s progress at the tournament through the Warriors members Facebook page.
