The Saskatchewan Amateur Bodybuilding Association’s provincial championship was held over the weekend in Saskatoon, and a number of athletes from the Prince Albert area returned home with trophies including Shellbrook’s Sheena Macleod.

MacLeod, who finished first in the Fitness Division, had not competed in eight years but told paNOW she felt a desire to continue her fitness journey after undergoing some big life changes, including the birth of her son four years ago.

“This was a long time coming; unfinished business,” she said, adding there were a number of times during her training she felt like quitting.

To add to the emotional pressures she was feeling, Macleod was forced to change her fitness routine a few days prior to competition day due to a shoulder injury she experienced.

“I’m not upset. I’m proud that happened because it shows you can still do what you need to do to to cross the finish line,” she said.

The provincial championship includes a number of categories including figure, physique and bikini. The Bikini Open Division had three categories (A, B and C) which were based on height. Prince Albert’s Lisa Gyoerick finished first in the A category, while Tisdale’s Heather Hudak was first in the B category, and Prince Albert’s Kyla Baun finished second in the C category.

“The journey to get to the stage is a mental and physical battle and just reaching that level is a win in itself,” she said. “What I have gained competing doesn’t come from a medal or a judge’s score. What I’ve gained is an experience of a lifetime.”
