North East SPCA hires shelter manager

With the Harry and Eve Vickar Shelter in Melfort expected to open in a few months, the North East SPCA has found its manager to oversee it.

North East SPCA announced Meagan Schmitz was hired as its shelter manager. Schmitz told northeastNOW she’s excited for the opportunity.

“I’ve been in the position since April 29, so I’m still kind of making my way around and getting a better understanding of what’s been done to date and where the organization is going next,” Schmitz said. “The board is very active, helpful, and knows the area a lot better than I do. They can help me get my feet planted and start to make connections and relations with the surrounding communities in the Northeast area.”

While she’s new to the Northeast, Schmitz has previous experience in the animal welfare sector. She worked for the Prince Albert SPCA for over four years and is vice president of the Canine Action Project – an organization which works with Saskatchewan First Nations to help manage their dog population.

Schmitz said she’s always had a strong love for animals and a good connection with people who share her passion.

“I really enjoyed putting in my time and energy to helping the animals and helping people become the best pet owners that they can be,” she said. “It’s always good to see those happy stories at the end of the day when an animal gets adopted.”

Schmitz’s next steps as shelter manager for the North East SPCA are to finish furnishing the Harry and Eve Vickar Shelter and working with the surrounding towns, R.M.’s, and villages in the Northeast for fundraising, services, and sponsorships.

Schmitz said the North East SPCA is always welcoming volunteers for fundraising events.

The Harry and Eve Vickar Shelter is expected to open in Melfort on Sept. 27, 2019.
