Gardening the Wright way

You know its springtime in Northeast Saskatchewan when Wright’s Greenhouse opens its doors.

Stepping through the warm entrance way and into an explosion of color and greenery is something gardeners dream about all winter.

Wright’s Greenhouse in Beatty and now in Melfort, has been a staple of north-eastern life for 41 years. It is always the place to go to find the latest trends in gardens, flowerbeds and, more recently, decorative indoor planting.

Wright’s Greenhouse carries a wide variety of flowers, plants, herbs and vegetables.

“This year we’ve really been seeing a trend towards gardens. That is really coming back, especially with the younger generation. They want to know and learn about gardening and what to plant, probably because the cost of food is getting so expensive,” said Wright’s Greenhouse business owner Angie Wright.

So, this year, in addition to their extensive collection of flowers, perennials and plants, Wright’s is providing more herbs and garden vegetables. They’ve also added a unique selection of less familiar plants like tomatillo and okra to suit the new generation of gardeners wanting to make their own salsa verde or gumbo.

“We are also seeing more people wanting indoor plants, including succulents…which has been a favorite for a couple of years…so we have more of those this year as well,” Wright said.

Whether you need flowers for full sun, shade, climbing or crawling, the greenhouse is in full bloom with all sorts of options including perennials, fruit trees, roses and grasses.

Wright’s Greenhouse expanded its selection to include lesser known plants and vegetables.

The passion for plants at Wright’s Greenhouse is part of the family’s history. The business in Beatty started when Angie’s parents, Tom and Wendy Wright, returned to Saskatchewan after a downturn in the Alberta economy. With baby Angie in tow, the couple, with help from Tom’s parents, developed Wright’s Greenhouse from the ground up and eventually, the baby rocking in the bassinet in the greenhouse became the young woman who now operates the business. Angie has a Horticulture Degree and is constantly updating her education to keep in line with the latest trends that keep returning customers happy and new gardeners inspired.

But Wright’s Greenhouse is more than the family that runs it. It is a part of the larger community. It has become a time-honoured tradition for many families to visit the greenhouse as soon as it opens, and locals still see the red truck with the Wright’s Greenhouse sign travelling around the area delivering plans to communities.

With an incredible selection, an eye on gardening trends and generations of experience and knowledge, Wright’s Greenhouse is the obvious choice for any gardener this spring – locate in Beatty and Melfort.
