Long-time SJHL defenceman commits to Red Deer College

After five seasons in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL), Boedy Donald has committed to play post-secondary hockey.

The Star City, Sask. native has committed to Red Deer College (RDC) for the 2019/2020 season. Donald spent his last two and a half seasons in Melfort with the Mustangs, and Head Coach Trevor Blevins said RDC is getting a great player on and off the ice.

“He’s a tough, stay at home defenceman that was always reliable,” Blevins told northeastNOW. “And he’s got some skill too. Obviously Red Deer has seen that.”

Blevins added Donald was also an invaluable member off the ice as he was always involved in the community. He said the long-time SJHLer had a few options.

“Good for him to evaluate what he had, and make a decision,” Blevins said. “We’re pretty happy for him that he can continue on with hockey, but more importantly he’s a very committed student and he’s going to be very successful in whatever career choice he makes.”

On the ice, Donald began his career during the 2014/2015 season with the Kindersley Klippers. He played 34 games that season as a 16-year-old, which ended up being the lowest of his career. He played one more full season with Kindersley before opening the 2016/2017 season with the Nipawin Hawks. After 21 games with Nipawin, he was traded to the Mustangs. Blevins said Donald exceeded expectations after coming to the team.

“It was a no brainer, it was an easy trade to make,” Blevins said. “We’ve never looked back, he’s been an excellent player for our program.”

Donald went on to finish that season, and the next two with Melfort playing 166 games with the Mustangs. In total, Donald played in 243 SJHL regular season games, and 38 playoff games. His 281 total games are near the top of the list in SJHL history. Offensively, Donald scored a career high five goals, and 14 assists in the 2018/2019 season. He totalled eight goals and 34 assists through his five seasons. He notched five assists in the playoffs as well.
