‘Not just a person that pulls you over’: Melfort RCMP holds open house

Jun 6, 2019 | 12:03 PM

Adults and kids alike gathered at the Melfort RCMP detachment on Wednesday, June 5 for an Open House.

Cpl. Kyle Wyonzek is the acting detachment commander and said members decided to do an open house like this because they wanted a change from the town hall meetings they have had in the past.

“Now it was more of a lighter mood than a formal town hall meeting,” Wyonzek told northeastNOW. “More informal, and to get people to come and engage with us and see that we’re people too and we’re not just a person that pulls you over on the street or gives you a ticket. Come see where we work, and what we do, and to engage the community in a positive aspect.”

RCMP were not the only ones in attendance as Melfort Fire and Victim Services were there for part of the event. Wyonzek said they wanted to show not only the RCMP, but their partner agencies as well.

Wyonzek added a big part of having the event was to get a bit closer to the kids of the community and bridge that gap.

“It helps the kids come up to us and not be scared of the police or anything like that,” he said. “Because it can be very intimidating for some of young kids. So, they can see the inside of a police car, play with the sirens, play with the lights, and see what we do, and talk to us a little bit more.”

Those who attended had a barbecue lunch, took detachment tours, watched police dog training and met Safety Bear.
