Bradshaw wins Sask. Party nomination in Carrot River Valley

Jun 21, 2019 | 10:13 AM

For the fourth straight provincial election, Fred Bradshaw will represent the Saskatchewan Party in the Carrot River Valley riding.

After nearly 550 votes were tallied by Sask. Party members in the Arborfield Community Hall on June 20, the incumbent MLA was announced winner of the party’s nomination meeting over Terry Youzwa.

Bradshaw, who has been the Carrot River Valley’s Sask. Party candidate since 2005 and has won three provincial elections (2007, 2011, and 2016) during that time, told northeastNOW he wasn’t confident of a victory going into the nomination meeting.

“Politics is a funny bird,” Bradshaw said. “You never quite know exactly what’s going to happen. It was a good, hard fight, but it was a clean fight that went both ways. I think neither one of us knew what was going to happen until the very end.”

Seconds after the result was announced, Bradshaw and Youzwa shook hands and briefly congratulated one another on their campaigns. Youzwa said it’s too early if he’ll attempt to run again.

“I wanted to take a shot at this now,” Youzwa said. “I didn’t think I’d be interested to travelling to Regina or Ottawa when I was in my seventies, so I looked at this as a here and now opportunity which should be pursued.

“I have no regrets about running; I ran a good, clean campaign. I really thank and congratulate our team, we just got outworked apparently and there wasn’t a desire to make a change for the future.”

Bradshaw said he’s been honoured to represent the Carrot River Valley constituency for the past 11 and a half years, although there are still a few things he’s been working on in office that he’d like to see through.

The Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) have not announced their candidate for the Carrot River Valley riding ahead of the province’s 29th general election on Oct. 26, 2020.
