Humboldt SPCA looking for dog fosters throughout July

One of the Humboldt and District SPCA’s Christmas-themed programs is being brought out for the summer.

The Foster Summer Break program is used to get dogs staying at the Humboldt SPCA’s shelter some experience in a temporary owner’s home during a short-staffed July.

As the Humboldt SPCA’s manager, Wanda Price is the primary person who looks after dogs in the shelter, and said it would bring ease to her mind knowing they’re taken care of during her time off.

“We supply everything,” Price told northeastNOW. “Food, kennel, leash, collar, toys, treats, whatever they want. We have some really nice dogs here. It’s just a high stress kind of thing when they’re separated from all the other dogs, but then they start bouncing around, jumping, running in circles, and barking because ‘Oh, people! Come on over!’”

Price said the dogs get antsy when they stay in the shelter for too long, especially for older dogs when they see puppies get brought in and adopted before them.

The program also serves as a chance for any potential owners or families to see if adopting a dog would work out long-term in their household.

“I had somebody that contacted me wanting to foster a German shepherd because they have been thinking about her and want to see how it goes,” Price said.

One possible downside that Price admitted could result in some dogs being fostered only to be dropped back off at the shelter is any abandonment issues, although there are positives for them to experience a new life.

“They think this is their home,” she said. “Most of them are strays, so this is the most attention they’ve ever had in their lives. If they get loose on somebody, they run to the door and want to come in. It’s not like they ever want to get away from this place, they want to get in. If they can get into a home, they’ll see what it’s like, and it’s much nicer than here.

“If there’s an adoption or two out of that, it would be awesome.”

The Humboldt SPCA will start fostering out dogs on July 1 for a two-week stay in a new home, or for the entire month.
