Trevor Logan named Mustangs’ assistant coach

It’s going to be the Trevor and Trevor Show behind the Melfort Mustang bench for the 2019/2020 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season.

Trevor Logan was hired as the Mustangs Assistant Coach to work under Head Coach Trevor Blevins. The Porcupine Plain native recently coached part of the 2017/2018 season with the Carrot River Outback Thunder and will jump to the SJHL this season. Logan said there was a time he wasn’t sure if he’d be able to coach at this level.

“Hadn’t really given it much thought, because I didn’t think that I would have time to work at this level at this point,” Logan told northeastNOW. “But when [Blevins] reached out to me and then I talked to my job and my family, they were all supportive, so it’s very exciting to get to do something like this.”

Logan does have some ties to the area, coaching some minor hockey, as well as playing a little bit in Melfort as well. He said it was a good fit to join the Mustangs.

“Enjoyed my time in town, and around that organization,” he said. “So I’m very excited about it for sure.”

Logan said he’s a very versatile coach.

“I guess sometimes you have to adapt to the role you’re in,” Logan said. “And whatever Trevor is looking for out of me, I will try and do the best I can at whatever he needs me to do.”

Logan added he and Blevins went to school together for a bit as well, adding to his connection with Melfort.

As for the team itself, the Mustangs are coming off a trip to the SJHL Finals, and Logan said he sees a good future.

“I think it’s very exciting, the fact that there’s a lot of young talented guys coming in,” he said. “And from the people that I talked to, it seemed like it was a very good group last year. A lot of the kids that are coming back this year. So that’s exciting to have some young talent with good character and build something.”

Logan’s coaching experience past his time in Carrot River expands to Lloydminster where he coached some minor hockey, as well as Innisfail, Alta. where he coached the senior hockey team. He also worked with Tisdale Trojans new Head Coach, Dennis Kubat as the two coached the Northeast Wolfpack at one point.

In a release, Blevins said he’s looking forward to coaching with Logan.

“Trevor brings many years of hockey experience as a player and a coach to our program,” he said. “The fact that he’s worked with junior hockey players recently is a huge asset to our team.”

Logan added he plans to stay in Porcupine Plain for the time being, and travel back and forth. He currently manages an independent ag retail, and will continue to do so.
