Tisdale 4-H Beef Club steers into Show and Sale weekend

A year’s worth of work for young cattle raisers will be on display at the Melfort Agriculture Grounds.

The Tisdale 4-H Beef Club will host their Achievement Day on Friday, July 5, where 28 of their members will show off the cattle, steers, and heifers they’ve raised since the fall to be judged and graded.

Members as young as six years old have cared for, fed, washed, and vaccinated their cattle for nearly a year, and according to the club’s junior project leader Stacey Hunt, they’ve been independent in the process.

The club held project meetings where the members learn about beef, the marketing, everything involved with keeping cattle healthy, and what it takes to become a full time beef farmer.

Outside of the meetings, the members learn how to raise cattle by doing it on their own.

“They have to raise these cattle and keep track of how much it costs to raise them,” Hunt told northeastNOW. “A lot of the kids are living on a farm already and have cattle, but some people just choose to purchase a steer and raise it on someone’s farm. All of the cost is definitely on the kids and their families.”

Achievement Day is the Tisdale 4-H Beef Club’s miniature version of the Melfort Regional Beef Show and Sale that is also taking place at the agriculture grounds from July 7 to 8.

Young cattle farmers from 4-H clubs across the region will be judged on their animals, record books, and showmanship prior to potentially selling their cattle on the final day and keeping the profits.

However, life lessons in the agriculture industry will be learned when the members’ opportunity to sell their cattle comes around.

“It’s not an easy thing,” Hunt said. “You work with these cattle and train them all year, and then you have to sell them. They are sold to be slaughtered, as that’s what beef is raised for in this country.”

Hunt encouraged any kids interested in raising cattle to stop by the Melfort Agriculture Grounds for Achievement Day as the Tisdale 4-H Beef Club will host a class following the judging portion of the show.
