City of Melfort looking for proposals to run Northern Lights Palace concession

Jul 30, 2019 | 2:28 PM

The City of Melfort has put out a request for proposals to gauge interest on operating the concession at the Northern Lights Palace.

“We sent that out to the public thinking there could be an entrepreneurial person out there that would love to be involved in something like this and see it as a great opportunity,” Director of Community Development and Planning Brent Lutz said.

The incumbent operators have been there in the Palace for about three years now, but the contract is expiring and Lutz said they decided to put out a request for proposals because they hadn’t done so for a while, and it was time to see what was out there.

“We want to see who is out there and what ideas they have to make the concession services at the palace as good as they can be,” Lutz said.

Lutz said the successful applicant would likely have some sort of experience in the food industry, and have some good branding for the concession. The city also wants to see their business plan, menu items and proposed hours. Usually the concession is open for Melfort Mustang hockey games, parties that take place at the Palace, and during the busy times of the wave pool and waterslide.

While the request for proposals is out to the public, Lutz said there is still the opportunity for the current operators to stay there if they choose to and the proposal works for the city.

Another perk to running the Northern Lights Palace concession could be growth with the City of Melfort. Lutz said with the current expansion at the Spruce Haven Recreation Area, there is the opportunity for some sort of set up possibly at Spruce Haven. Lutz added there could also be the opportunity to be available at different events around the City.

Proposals will be accepted until August 15, and the contract will begin on November 1.
