Melfort Dairy Queen aims to continue fundraising growth for Miracle Treat Day

Dairy Queen’s 17th annual Miracle Treat Day isn’t the first time Melfort has seen a spike in people lining up for a Blizzard ice cream treat.

Cassie Davis and her husband have owned the Melfort Dairy Queen for seven years – they even met while they were the employees flipping Blizzards upside down to customers – so it’s not their first time preparing for a busier crowd.

“Our staff is always very excited to celebrate Miracle Treat Day,” Davis told northeastNOW. “Our manager Chantell, this is her favourite day of the year and she really takes the reins and runs with it.”

The Melfort Dairy Queen has seen growth over the last two years for Miracle Treat Day. Davis said the Melfort location would previously raise $5,000 per year for the Children’s Miracle Network, but the last two years have each seen $10,000 being donated with help from extra indoor fundraisers, Blizzard pre-orders from local businesses, and general support from the community.

“Hopefully this year will add up to $30,000 from our location,” Davis said. “We never want to go below whatever we raised last year. Speaking on behalf of Chantell, I’m sure she’d like to see $11,000.”

All net proceeds from each Blizzard sold will go to the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation – the only Saskatchewan member of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

As a former cardiology technologist for Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, Davis knows the importance of a children’s hospital in Saskatchewan.

“We used to have our young cardiac patients come in, so it’s going to be a big deal for us this year to get to donate towards an actual children’s hospital and keep these kids in Saskatchewan,” she said. “It means a lot for our family.”
