Busy summer wraps up for Melfort Museum ahead of busy fall season

The Melfort and District Museum has put a cap on their summer events and have a busy fall season in store.

Wednesday night barbecues were a great success with an average of 100 people in attendance each week. Funds raised at the events go directly back into the museum and it’s programming.

Curator Gail Marie Anderson said their time warp program on Thursday’s was also a summer highlight.

“The kids learnt a lot about history and about the culture of Melfort and just had a lot of fun,” Anderson said. “Yesterday was our last one and they had a slip-n-slide and slid out of summer and into the fall.”

The special summer events also serve as a way of getting the community into the museum according to Anderson.

“They get interested in the museum when they come and some even volunteer for things afterwards and so it’s a really good way then to get the museum out into the community,” she said.

The museum staff will now put their focus on several events in September including Community Connections, Girl Greatness, and Culture Days.

Girl Greatness is an event that will host around 100 girl guides for an afternoon. Culture Days take place September 27 and 28 at the Kerry Vickar Centre.

Tours of the museum continue and the pioneer village will be open until Oct. 11.

Projects within the museum grounds were emptying of the thresher shed and a new metal building that will be transformed for a hardware display, the exhibit hall was reconfigured as well.

More boardwalk replacement will be happening with the ‘Thanks for the Planks’ campaign still underway. A $10 donation gets the name of the donator up on the donor wall in the museum.

“We have just been extremely busy and expect to be really busy in the fall,” Anderson said.
